The cornerstone of excellent long term dental health
We believe in preventative care, with hygiene treatments an important factor when considering overall oral health. Our highly experienced and motivated hygienists are skilled at spotting and treating gum disease and decay before it becomes a more serious issue, and providing professional cleans that leave your teeth feeling clean and sparkling.
At The Old Stables, we are committed to providing you with constant preventative care and helping you feel confident looking after your beautiful smile. You don’t need to see the dentist before attending a hygiene appointment. If you would like to see the hygienist, please get in touch.

Why are hygiene appointments important?
Dental plaque is a bacterial film that sticks to your teeth and gums, causing tooth decay and gum disease if not removed. A good brushing and flossing routine at home will be able to tackle most of the plaque, but your hygienist can help with any build up in harder to reach areas. During your appointment, we also assess the current condition of your gums and help your oral care at home with tips and advice.
If left unchecked, decay and gum disease can damage perfect teeth and cause bad breath, inflammation, receding gums, and eventually lead to tooth loss.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?
Initially, we take a look at the condition of your gums and ask a few questions about your general health and oral hygiene routine at home. We give tips and advice on how to effectively care for your teeth and gums, including showing you bespoke brushing and flossing techniques.
The main part of your hygiene appointment is a professional deep clean, removing stubborn plaque and tartar from all areas of your mouth. We then polish your teeth, leaving them feeling smooth and sparkling clean.

Your personalised gum health programme
At The Old Stables Dental Practice, we believe that gum health is the foundation of a healthy smile. Our bespoke periodontal care is tailored to your individual needs, because no two mouths – and no two patients – are the same.
Our experienced team of hygienists and therapists each bring their own specialist approach to treatment, yet all are united by a shared goal: achieving exceptional oral health outcomes for every patient. Whether you need routine maintenance or a more advanced level of care, your hygienist will ensure you feel informed, confident, and fully supported throughout your journey.
Your tailored hygiene plan will begin with education. We’ll help you understand how best to use your toothbrush, interdental brushes (such as TePe), floss, and even tongue scrapers – so that your home routine works hand-in-hand with your in-practice care.
PMPR (Professional Mechanical Plaque Removal)
We then use a variety of techniques to remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and biofilm – the harmful build-up that can compromise your gum health. The method we choose will depend entirely on the current condition of your gums, and may involve approaches you’ve heard of such as root planing, ultrasonic scaling and while the tools may vary, the aim is always the same: clean, healthy gums tailored to you.
This is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s a personalised gum disease prevention programme, created uniquely for you – and delivered with the experience, care, and attention to detail you’d expect from our dedicated hygiene team.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) represents a revolutionary, patient-friendly approach to professional dental cleaning, setting a new gold standard in preventive and maintenance oral care. This innovative Swiss technology is designed for maximum comfort and effectiveness.
The process begins with the application of a disclosing solution, which temporarily colours any hidden biofilm (plaque) on your teeth, making it visible to both you and our hygienist. This “guided” approach ensures no problematic areas are missed. Next, using state-of-the-art air polishing technology, a gentle jet of warm water, air, and a fine, pleasant-tasting powder is used to gently remove the stained biofilm, soft deposits, and superficial stains from your teeth, gums, and even dental implants and braces.
GBT is a minimally invasive treatment that provides a comprehensive, comfortable, and visibly superior clean, helping you achieve and maintain optimal oral health.

Our hygienist, Lianne Broome, is certified by the British Institute of Laser Dentistry and qualified to provide laser treatment for the benefit of gum health.
The laser is used to help with the removal of bacteria between the tooth and gum, and can drastically improve gum health by dramatically lowering the bacterial count present.
We can also use lasers to treat cold sores and ulcers, to increase blood circulation, and promote healing.

How often should I visit the hygienist?
How often you visit for a hygiene appointment will depend on the condition of your teeth and gums. We suggest every six months is ideal for maintaining excellent gum health, but your hygienist will let you know how long you should leave between visits at the end of your appointment.
Do I have to be referred for hygiene treatment by my dentist?
You no longer have to see the dentist before booking a hygiene appointment. If you feel you would benefit from an additional visit to the hygienist in between your regular dental check ups, please contact us to book an appointment.
Can the hygienist whiten my teeth?
While the aim of a hygiene appointment is not to whiten teeth, you may find your teeth appear brighter and whiter after a deep clean by the hygienist. If you would like more information about our whitening treatment, please get in touch.
What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a deeper form of gum disease that affects the bone supporting the teeth. Left untreated, periodontitis may eventually result in teeth having to be extracted, as some of the bone is lost and teeth become loose. You can prevent periodontal disease from getting worse by maintaining a good dental care routine and making regular visits to your dentist or hygienist.
What is air polishing?
Air polishing is a dental hygiene procedure that uses a mixture of air, water, and fine powder particles to remove stains, plaque, and soft deposits from teeth. It’s a non-invasive and gentle method for cleaning and polishing the teeth.
Is air polishing safe for my teeth and gums?
Yes, air polishing is considered safe for most patients. It is a gentle and minimally abrasive technique that is typically safe for both teeth and gums. Book in your appointment with us and we can provide advice tailored to your specific dental needs.
