Effective, established and affordable restorations

The chances are that most people will need a filling at some point in their lives. It is a very common treatment, used to fill cavities and repair damage while restoring strength and functionality to the tooth.

Traditionally, silver amalgam fillings were the first choice, a very reliable, cost-effective and hardwearing option. However, white composite fillings have now become more popular, combining strength and durability with a highly aesthetic, tooth coloured result.

What does the treatment involve?

Placing a composite filling is a very straightforward procedure, completed in one short appointment.

  1. We use local anaesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth and minimise any discomfort before removing the decay present.
  2. We apply the composite filling material in layers, taking care to ensure it is colour matched to your tooth. It is accurately moulded to mimic your natural tooth shape, and contoured on the bite surface.
  3. The filling is then hardened using a bright light and given a professional polish. It sets immediately, and can be used for eating straight away.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will my composite filling blend into my tooth?

Yes, the composite is colour matched to your natural tooth so it blends perfectly, and is near invisible. Unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite is a strong aesthetic choice.

  • Can my filling be repaired?

Composite fillings can be easily repaired, adding more composite material to restore small areas of damage. If more significant damage has occurred, your dentist may choose to remove the whole filling and replace it with new, as it is an easy and quick procedure.

  • Is having a filling painful?

Having a filling placed shouldn’t be painful. We use local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort but many patients report feeling no pain during the procedure.
