What is snoring?
Snoring is very common and put simply, it is the sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in the mouth, nose & throat when we breathe in and out. Snoring mainly happens when we sleep because our muscles relax, and this loss of muscle tone is insufficient to stop the airway tissue from vibrating. Most people snore from time to time with little consequences, but it can have a big impact on your bed partner. Interestingly, we have evolved to wake up two or three times a night to check there are no lions around… then fall back asleep!
However, more severe cases of snoring can lead to sleep apnoea, a condition where the airway is significantly blocked, causing oxygen deprivation and moments where breathing stops altogether. This can lead to nightmares, frequent sleep interruptions, and long-term health problems.

Factors that can contribute to snoring include being overweight, drinking alcohol before bed, or having a deviated septum.
Can I use a device to help with my snoring?
Yes, there are several devices available that can help reduce or eliminate snoring. The Sleepwell is the most clinically proven device for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea.
