How do veneers work?

Veneers are thin tooth coloured shells which are fixed to the front surface of teeth. They are used to cover discoloration or damage, and can improve small gaps or an irregular shape to fully transform your smile.

Modern veneers are thinner and stronger than ever, and require only a small amount of the natural tooth to be removed prior to fitting, if any. Innovative digital technology ensures the veneers are precisely planned, resulting in highly accurate and beautiful results.

What does the treatment involve?

  1. If you are dentally fit, and a suitable candidate for veneers, we arrange an initial consultation to discuss your treatment plan and answer any of your questions.
  2. We take digital scans and images of your teeth so your veneers can be created, and can even show you a digital preview of how your smile will look following treatment.
  3. We check you are happy with the planned results and prepare your teeth for treatment. If needed, a thin layer of enamel is removed and temporary veneers are fitted to protect your teeth between appointments.
  4. Your veneers are carefully created at an off-site laboratory. When they are ready, we check they look exactly as you imagined and fit them into place using strong dental adhesive.
  5. We give you some advice on how to look after your veneers and leave you to start showing off your smile! Veneers are strong and resilient, but you still need to treat them with care to ensure they last for many years.

Frequently asked questions

  • Are veneers reversible?

As some tooth enamel is usually removed to accommodate the veneers, they are not reversible and will need to be replaced if they become chipped, damaged or worn.

  • Is the treatment painful?

Most patients report that they experience no pain or discomfort at all during treatment. We take time to make sure you feel relaxed and comfortable before we begin, and use local anaesthetic if we are removing a layer of tooth enamel. You may feel some sensitivity after treatment, but this is temporary and will fade.

  • Can I brush my veneers?

Yes, you need to brush your veneers carefully twice a day. It’s best to think of them just as natural teeth and treat them as such.

  • Will my veneers fall off?

No, as they are bonded to the front of your teeth with strong adhesive, your veneers will not fall off on their own. They do have the potential to break or chip, but can be replaced.
